The Himalayan range, one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders on Earth, majestically shields the Kashmir Valley from multiple sides. These towering peaks are not only breathtaking but also serve as one of the richest habitats for wildlife. Remarkably, nearly one-third of the world’s mammalian species are found within these lofty mountains, making it a critical sanctuary for biodiversity.
Kashmir – “Wildlife”
In everyday language, wildlife is often associated with fierce animals that live in forests and are perceived as being of no direct use to humans. However, in a broader sense, wildlife includes all undomesticated plants and animals that thrive in their natural habitats, whether in forests, deserts, grasslands, or other ecosystems. Wildlife plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.
The lofty ranges of the Kashmir Valley are part of the Himalayas, creating a diverse environment for various species. One of the most notable animals of the region is the Hangul, or Kashmir Stag, which is one of the world's most endangered species of red deer. To protect such species, several wildlife sanctuaries have been established across the valley, notably in the districts of Srinagar, Anantnag, and Baramulla.
